
Dr. Mary Walker Memorial
Born November 26, 1832 in the Town of Oswego, Dr. Mary Walker was an early pioneer for Women's Rights, an Army Surgeon in the Civil War, and the ONLY female to ever receive the Congressional Medal of Honor.
Her colorful life's history included becoming the second woman in history to earn an MD degree from Syracuse University's School of Medicine, being captured as a prisoner of the Confederate Army during the Civil War, and Publishing Early treatises advocating the Rights of Women that ultimately led to the abolition of Women's sufferage.
Her Monument stands in front of a small Museum in the Town of Oswego on Route 7, approximately 4 miles West of the City; and is a tribute to her influence around the World in furthering Women's rights and freedom.
